Twelve Free Crochet Sweater Patterns to Make this Winter

I dunno about you, but I LOVE crocheting sweaters during the colder months. It brings me life, especially when it’s dreary and freezing out. It’s so fun to take a few skeins of yarn and transform it into a super cute garment to wear.. even better when someone compliments it, right?? So that’s why I thought it’d be nice to have a roundup of some of my favorite patterns for sweaters on the internet. And best part? They’re all free! Hope you find your next project in this post :)

Alright… I know I always say the designs I just release are my new favorite, but I’m being really REALLY serious this time (as opposed to just really serious). I’m happy to share with you The Webwork Cardigan, an open-front top that’s airy and comfy. And perhaps the best part? The fun diamond-weblike stitch pattern… It’s such a great warm weather garment I think you’ll DEF need in your closet.

This cardigan is available in three different sizes: S/M, L/XL and PLUS. The fitting is incredibly forgiving and meant to be oversized.

While the stitch pattern may look a little intimidating, I found once I worked the row sequence a couple of times I didn’t even need to think much about it at all. It’s very easy to get the hang of it in my opinion. That said, though, I’d probably rate this pattern at an intermediate/advanced skill level. I did provide a stitch chart for visual assistance that I think will help greatly!

The sweater height and sleeve length are customizable, which is cool if you’d like it to be shorter/longer depending on your height. I also thought this piece even looked great without the sleeves!

-Fingering weight (category 1 superfine) yarn (see Notes for yardage), I used Loops & Threads Woolike in color Charcoal (linked here)
-3.5 mm E hook
-yarn needle
-sewing pins, optional

-the tch at the beginning of each row count as a dc, if it’s paired with another dc it will be counted as a 2dcg

-cardigan is worked up in 3 panels (two front panels, and a back), plus two sleeves

-you can add or subtract rows on each of the panels if you’d like to customize the length of the sweater. Same goes for the sleeves. If you add rows to the panels, this will throw off the row count for sewing up the sides to create the sleeve hole. You’ll need to add/subtract the amount of rows you worked to the row number specified for your size.

-the design is very forgiving in terms of sizing, it’s pretty oversized— not fitted. It has an open front, and 3/4 length sleeves

-pattern is INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED

-below is a stitch chart I drew up to give you a visual of the pattern you’re doing— it’s really easy to get the hang of once you get into it. The chart below is condensed, showing less stitches than the actual sweater panels, it is just an example to help you visualize. Assembly:

Once all pieces are complete you’re ready to assemble the sweater. First grab your back panel and two front panels.

You will lay your front panels on top of the back panel like shown in the photo above. Line the front panels along the outside edges of the back panel. You can pin them together to keep the panels from shifting around.

*****For size LARGE/XLARGE : make sure the sides that have more 3dcg groups match up on the outsides

To sew the front panels to the back panel you will sew along the very edges using a whip stitch (make sure to not sew too tightly!). Sew along each side starting at the bottom and work up to designated row for each size:

for size PLUS: sew up through row 55

After the sides are sewn, you will sew along the top edges of the panels using the same technique. Start on the outside and sew inward, and stop when you reach the other side of the front panel. Sew along the top of each front panel, connecting them to the back panel. There will be two arm holes on the top sides where you didn’t sew.

Once you’re finished sewing, this side of the sweater is now considered the “wrong side”

Next you’ll grab one of your sleeves. Fold it over, two sides together. You can pin it together to keep from shifting while sewing.

Then you will sew using the same technique from the body, along the very edges of the open side (shown in photo above). Once sewn, the side facing out is now the wrong side of the sleeve.

Repeat for the other sleeve.

Next you will sew your sleeve onto your body piece. With the body piece wrong side out still, and the sleeve turned right side out, slip your sleeve into the armhole of the body piece like shown in the photo above.

You will line up the bottom side of the sleeve (row 1) with the armhole of the body piece and you will also match up the seam of the sleeve to where the armpit of the body piece is. You can pin the two together to keep from shifting while sewing. Then, holding the body piece and sleeve like in the photo above, you will work a whip stitch along the very edges just like the rest of the garment (again, keep tension loose!). Sew all the way around the sleeve + body piece.

Repeat instructions for the other sleeve.

Weave in all ends. You could even add some fringe or tassels to the edges if you’d like!
